After graduating from the University of South Florida with a degree in Mass Communications/Advertising in 2006, I was hired by Nelson Publishing as Associate Editor of Health Management Technology magazine.
Above my name on the masthead were those of a Senior Editor and our Managing Editor.
I started out proofreading their work but was soon producing content for the Products & Service section, Newsmakers section, and Industry Watch and Hardware sections.
And before long I was interviewing healthcare IT executives and working with their PR reps for full-length feature articles.
I also attended several massive trade shows held around the country.
When the “Great Recession” and credit crisis of 2007-2010 took hold, print ad revenue for the magazine vanished almost overnight.
The print magazines of Nelson Publishing fell like casualties of war, one by one, until only HMT remained. But it wasn’t long until even it was forced to transition to a digital-only product, like so many other print publications during that time.
I was the last of the editorial staff to remain employed…the proverbial “last man standing.”
During this time I was handed responsibility for producing content for a series of “e-Newsletters” that went out to the magazine’s subscriber base.
